"Behind us lays a century with ups and downs. With two world wars and the resulting separation, Germany has been especially affected. Nevertheless we can be somehow proud to stay on the winners´   side of history at the end of the century. Our country is reunited in peace and freedom. We have a politically stabile system and an effecient economy. For the first time in this century we have a peaceful and friendly relationship with all our neighbours. Together with France we form the driving force of the European Union. To continue this development will  be the most important task of Germany´  s policy at the beginning of a new century."
